Artificial Intelligence, a novel 21st-century technology offers transformative potential for educational systems, presenting Iranian universities with unique opportunities and challenges. A precise understanding of these is essential for effective policy making. This research comprehensively investigates the opportunities and challenges of using AI in transforming academic teaching and learning in Iran. The study was qualitative, employing thematic analysis. The population included experts and professors proficient in AI and educational technology in Iranian universities. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews with 15 professors and experts, using purposeful sampling, and analyzed through Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis approach. Findings categorized four pervasive challenging themes: technical and infrastructural issues (lack of technical/human infrastructure); human and cultural issues (resistance to change, psycho-social consequences); financial and managerial issues (financial limitations, managerial/planning challenges) and ethical, privacy, and security issues (ethics in educational AI, educational data privacy, cybersecurity/system protection). Conversely, three pervasive opportunities included enhancing educational quality/efficiency (improving teaching/learning, facilitating evaluation/feedback, resource management/cost reduction), increasing educational/research productivity (process automation, scientific collaborations, research quality enhancement), and developing future skills/capabilities (student preparedness for future job market, expanding access/educational equity, increasing student interaction/motivation). Results indicate AI's potential to improve education, but its success depends on targeted infrastructure investment, clear legal/ethical frameworks and reduced cultural resistance through continuous training for faculty and students.
